Ableism

Ableism is a massive problem not in just everyday life but in the education system. I have watched myself and many others be effected by this. According to Oxford Languages, ableism is "discrimination in favor of able-bodied people". You can see this in schools when the "funny" kids pick on kids with disabilities or even when teachers deliberately will target the behaviors of a kid with a known disability. Actions like this make it nearly impossible for someone with a prominent disability to make it through the school system. There are systems set up to try helping and accommodating to their needs but it is simply just not enough. Furthermore, it is always all or nothing. It is either you can't learn and need to be in this class that is separated from the rest, or you are completely fine. There needs to be a system set up where those who still need help but not to the extreme can get their help.

I grew up going through school with a copious amount of ADHD. It made it so insanely hard to try and get through school. I went to literally everyone I could go to for help and I got absolutely nothing. The only thing I got was a letter saying I could pick where my seat was if my teacher approved (this did not help me at all). Furthermore none of my teachers even read my 504 saying that I could do this so I wasn't allowed to anyways. From K-12 I had to fight as hard as I could just to make it through school and I still barely came out on the other side. I will say (I don't mean this in an egotistical way), I was and am a smart kid but I have such a hard time getting though school that none of my grades show it. My entire educational journey I have spent alone after asking for help time and time again. Even this year I went to the disability services for help and accommodations. I spent a couple hours filling out all their forms, answering all their questions, and providing the documents needed. To this day I am still waiting for a response from them. It has been months and I have even reached out to them to follow up and have gotten nothing. As a student who suffers from a disability like ADHD I feel incredibly seen and helped (read that with sarcasm)
